The media whipped up a fear storm about ebola, SARS, MERS, swine flu, bird flu, goat flu, and none of it ever really affected Americans except a very small number who traveled a lot overseas.

Again, the fact that those weren't a huge issue was a consequence of a lot of very hard work from public health workers around the world, rather than indicating that they weren't actually dangerous. Without the countermeasures that were applied, they would have been a much bigger deal for Americans. Fortunately, as citizens of developed countries, we do have access to such countermeasures. It's just important to appreciate that rather than acting as though these very dangerous diseases are inherently too trivial to be worth worrying about.
