The game's setting was a comic book in which you interacted with your environment, up to and including ripping pages, and faced opponents who were hand-drawn by your nemesis. The sound and visuals were top notch and the comic bubble dialogue allowed greater characterization and interaction than had been attempted up to that point.

It pushed the Sega Genesis to the absolute limit. Unfortunately, something had to give. Because the sound, visuals, and interactive mechanics ate up so much cartridge space, they had to come up with cheap ways of preventing you from beating the game on a two-day rental.

First, they stiffed you with a Game Over after a single death. Second, the whole game is an endurance test as anything you do or don't do will slowly drain your health. You lose health punching your way through unavoidable obstacles and enemies will hold on indefinitely to get just one shot in to drain the tiniest bit of health. It's not challenging in the same way as something like Contra or Ninja Gaiden. It's more like trying to hold your piss when you really, really need to go.

Another flaw too is that they tried to get a bit ambitious with the fighting mechanics. You go into this game expecting beat 'em up style combat and it's really like playing a platformer in which every enemy is a microcosm of a one on one fighting game opponent. You can't feasibly have a system of complex controls and combinations in a game which has ONE attack button. I managed to tough it out and beat the game, and my opinion of the game has gone up during that time, but I think most players quit before completing the first episode or shortly thereafter. And that's really too early in the game to weed out the players who aren't committed to beating it.
