The level of severity of the act is identical. The only reason you don't consider them the same is because of the rally proceeding the Charlottesville attack. Obviously this didn't take place at a rally, but the guy still attempted to murder a bunch of peaceful People gathered in one place explicitly for their political alignment.

You want me to say that the rally was terrible? Of course it was. Do you want me to say that the people at that rally were awful? Of course they were. But I'm not going to pretend that the person who tried to murder a bunch of protesters with his car is less severe than a person who tried to murder a bunch of voters with his car simply because of that.
Yeah it's almost like context matters. And no, the rally didn't precede the attack. The attack was part of the rally.
No i'm not defending this guy, put his away for however many counts of attempted murder you want, but it's completely intellectually dishonest to compare this to Charlottesville and you know it.
