There isnt a one sized fits all answer. Some nations nationalized certain natural resources and invested that. Quite a few of the EU countries arent able to easily provide, the PIGS nations say hi. They also havent tried to maintained US hegemony, in many cases US carrying their tab for defense. Also I believe we are carrying a higher burden of debt than any nation did when they incorporated their vast social safety nets. If the US debt balloons, remaining the world reserve currency could be difficult, which to the decision makers may be a higher priority than safety nets. But I dont care about any of that, my stance is simply from living in Seattle and seeing American socialism in action and I say no thanks.
