From cult to mystery cult to political monolith to fractured into as many flavors as you can imagine.religions evolve and branch naturally - they're just ever drifting memeplexes with potent mechanisms that have become baked in facilitating sustainable social management if denominations become static or otherwise stuck in time, it tends to be a reaction of some sort - usually to external threats or the perception of such - rather than the product of a natural progression --- ...
