Joker gave a portrait of an individual and weaved subtle commentary into the fabric of the picture. Parasite took the Epic Theater approach of emotionally distancing the audience from the characters in order to call attention to the underling issues. I respect what they did with the choices they made, but I'm gonna give the character study the nod over emotionally distant stock characters nine times out of ten. When it came to the use of violence for punctuation or shock value, Joker handled that better too.

That said, I can't blame them. I'd have probably voted for Parasite too had I been on the committee. If I'd sold my soul to become a professional judge of quality cinema, I wouldn't want to be the guy who nominated a "comic book movie" over a brilliantly crafted foreign film filled with social commentary that is relevant here in the US as well as South Korea.

It *is* a great movie. It's just not the best one made last year.
