Italy has one of the average ages in the world, were basically blindsided, and have one of the lowest number of hospital beds per capita in the world. They have 3.4 beds per 1000 people, which is a shockingly low number for a sudden outbreak like this (And for reference, the US has even lower numbers than that). And the disease has been hitting the oldest part of their population hard. For reference, the most recent statistics I can find show that over 75% of all confirmed Coronavirus cases in Italy are 50 or older, with 22% coming from people 21-50. And more than that it seems like they just handled this incompetently and it's costing them.

If you look at South Korea, who we have no reason to distrust, they have over 8000 cases, less than 100 deaths in a longer time frame than Italy. A big part of that is probably the fact that South Korea has 3 times the number of hospital beds than Italy per 1000 people, and South Korea is not nearly the tourism/travel magnet that Italy is.

To add to that, Japan has a mortality rate of 0.3% and one of the oldest age groups in the world. So there's way more going on in Italy than "China is lying".
