We could have a system were people in poverty weren't farmed to risk theirs lives as well as potential permanent mental and physical damage as well as social stigma if there's a particularly bad war etc. If we want to have government programs to bail people out of poverty, I'm all for it, but they don't need to be connected to the military.

It leads to nothing good when the underclass of society feels they have no option but to potentially fight and die just to be able to go to college and get a job afterwards. If people with options don't join the military, that tells you something about the military.
