The only thing an origin might provide at this point is an example of an organism that lives with it harmlessly, whose physiology might then provide some sort of inspiration for a cure (though given that turning humans into bats or whatever isn't really a viable treatment option, that's probably a stretch), otherwise, it's far more a matter of people looking for someone to blame than anything genuinely useful. Even if it were genuinely useful, that still doesn't mean laypeople need to concern themselves with it to the point that they encourage politicians to point fingers instead of actually fixing the problem.
