The X-Files is pretty much why we have shows like Supernatural now. Prior the X-Files, you didn't really have the same level of running continuity with weird investigation shows that you do today and everything was a lot more episodic. The show is notable for featuring a lot of seemingly-supernatural threats, although there's a lot of running scifi shit.
