No it definitly isn't. Most people speak the same language as 90+% of the people who they live near and interact with on a daily basis.

That's not to say there's no benefit to learning a second language. But that's highly dependent on the language you're learning and why you're learning it. I was semi fluent in French as a teenager, which was completly useless in retrospect. I live somewhere with very few french speaking people and have only been to France once. So I never really used it and it's largely forgotten at this point. Spanish probably would have been much more useful.

Either way, most people can get by their entire life with little to no issue only speaking one language. Especially if that language is english, chinese, or spanish.
