This may sound crazy at first and may open up a pandora's box of discussion, but I don't think every video game needs to be "traditionally fun" so long as it is engaging. The developers who go down that route open themselves up to a lot of criticism though, as there is that segment of gaming fans who do believe that fun (and fluid, intuitive gameplay) is king.
