If the girlfriend isn't happy unless it is just her and the friend alone, and if she constantly acts out to control him in social situations (and likely in private too), the friend is in an emotionally abusive relationship and might be struggling with codependency.

I only bring this up because I grew up around a person who had this, and they used to do exactly what your friend's girlfriend is doing all the time. It could be something else---the world of mental health issues is vast. But whatever it is, your friend doesn't deserve it and should leave if his girlfriend won't seek treatment and try to improve her behavior. Nobody needs that kind of static, man.
