The only way that a father isn't going to know his son's major is if he not only doesn't ask but also doesn't pay attention to it coming up. And the guy admits that he hadn't paid much attention to his son's life. How is that a reach? That's very possible. Especially since it's not like the son ever mentioned it, either. If the son did mention it and the dad forgot, that could be bad, though. And he explains why he hasn't really been too into his life at that time. He explains that the son's calls came less and less frequently because the son himself wanted to focus more on school work. Afterwards, the husband himself started having other troubles, as well.
