I feel like, you can't divorce something like this and legitimate blackface due to the long and ugly history concerning the latter.

obviously, Fallon's intentions weren't to insult or demean black people, but have some fun relating to a single person.

but the fact is that people are going to take offense to any non-black person painting themselves black, and their feelings are valid due to the history around blackface. you can't just repurpose something and hope that it will be seen differently.

I'm not into "cancel culture", though, and this was a while ago, and Fallon meant no malicious intent. so personally, I feel that this apology is a good thing, and hopefully Fallon will face no further backlash.
