If people were using assault rifles against police and military in large enough numbers to seriously threaten the military, they'd use drone strikes and tanks against them. It'd be no different from how the US deals with it in other countries.

My point being that any handheld firearm is not going to help you overthrow the government if it ever comes to that. Either you won't have enough people and they'll gun you down or you will have enough people that it's easy to blow you up with minimal civilian casualties. There's no reality where a few thousand people with personal firearms effectively threatens the US military.

The limiting factors in foreign warfare that makes guerilla warfare work to some degree is our ability to leave. Eventually our own people don't want us dying in a foreign war. In a fight to protect our own countries government from what would be deemed terrorist rebel groups, you never have a reason to leave or use insufficient force.
