| Lightning Strikes 06/02/20 1:24:49 PM #146: | Okay. Colonial Britain sucked. It was a brutal capitalist dictatorship that valued property more than people. It certainly wasn't free, and the regular citizens did not enjoy the freedoms that the upper class did. The actual freedoms and quality or life Britons enjoy came out of reformists who fought against that system. There are various surveys showing that what Britons are most proud of is nothing to do with that period, but is the NHS, which was a direct product of moving past that period of history. The NHS, the welfare state, public services and a high level of education came about as a result of the same Labour government that really began dismantling the empire, and rightly so.
