That's because other countries seldom place the same stock in their flags. The American flag is a representation of its country's values; not just a symbol of its national status.

The same held true of the Confederacy -- though in a much more perverse way. The actual battle flag of the South tucked the stars and bars into the corner and was 75% white to represent the alleged "superiority" of the white race.

To the people who say that both flags mean the same thing, I can understand them protesting the American flag. I disagree with them, but I understand their conflict. To the "just a cloth" crowd, why would you fight something that has no meaning to you, but considerable meaning to someone else? You're not going to change how someone else feels about that.
