Sometimes certain actions forever stain your life's legacy. Like being the top general of a rogue state that broke away because rich dudes wanted to enslave black people.
Worth remembering that Robert E. Lee was himself a rich dude who enslaved black people.
Also he had a notable predilection for attacking and looting freedmen towns on his campaigns north.

You dont know why southern states would still celebrate soldiers who fought to defend their state and families? They were traitors to the Union. They were not traitors to the states they called home. If the federal government tried to conscript you to literally kill people in your own neighborhood and you said nope, Id rather go to prison or fight you instead, I seriously doubt you would consider yourself a traitor, even though you technically would be.

Attack the celebrations and memorials from the slavery position. Thats the one that is reasonable.
A war that brought them death and ruin and (would have) benefited only the white aristocracy. It was a gross tragedy, yet only its architects ever seem to be honored. You do not see much commemoration of southern efforts to resist secession or the Confederacy, for example.
