I have a hard time believing Nomura would abandon a fanfiction-caliber deus ex machina like that after it's been introduced, but this does give me a sliver of hope for the rest of the remake if true. Yeah, the whole big Kingdom Hearts-esque fight at the end was the party defying fate. They fought the Whispers of Fate, and in doing so they changed some big events like Zack being alive in another timeline. The official Ultimania book confirmed that the Whispers are gone. The crazy thing is that at the end when they're defeated, Sephiroth comes up to Cloud at the Edge of Creation and essentially reveals he wanted the Whispers dead too, because him attempting to change fate caused them to appear.
