Practical for some knives. Generally not practical for swords - reach and leverage is limited, and the thumb can't exert the amount of control it would in a handshake grip.

It's in fiction mainly for style. Had very view real-world applications.
Yeah, like I said in Japanese stuff it tends to be primarily from the drawing position, striking an opponent attack from the rear.
