TopicSo is reverse-wielding a legit real-world tactic or does it just look cool?

So like with a katana, yeah it's mostly a fictional thing. That's not to say that there aren't specific techniques that use a reverse grip but they are generally used when drawing a sword to stab someone approaching from the rear. Reverse grip with a knife, balisong, or any other sort of short hand held blade is absolutely a thing.

Japanese Martial Arts like to get into training for really specific scenarios. There is an entire school of Koryu related to various ways to defend yourself in event you are in a tea ceremony and the person delivering the tea attacks you.

I want to go to that school. It'll more than likely never happen to me, but it would be awesome to learn.

I'm just passing through. Remember that.
