To be a Marxist just means that you view history through the lens of class conflict and economic power; see the dialectic below:

Marxists believe that these conflicts describe (Western) history very well.

For an example of a Marxist perspective, they see the Vietnam War not as the US """"""defending itself""""" from an impoverished colony that just won its independence that would have absolutely no reason to go to war with one of the two superpowers that effectively ran the world (which is a stretch and a half even if you're not a Marxist), but as the US attempting to gain access to Vietnamese resources, namely its rubber trees, as rubber is needed to make car tires, among other things. The war in Afghanistan is not seen as an effort to stabilize the country (after the US achieved its stated goal of killing bin Laden a whole 9 years ago), but to gain access to its trillions of dollars of mineral wealth. The current hate boner the US has for Venezuela is not seen as the US trying to liberate its people from an oppressive dictator (by enacting an embargo on medicine and other essential supplies that only hurt the people they claim to want to liberate), but the US trying to gain access to the largest oil reserves on the planet.

People throw around the word "marxist" like "communist" was thrown around during the Red Scare, but the word has an actual meaning and it's not as radical as it's made out to be.
