I think it's one part a situation where certain people who advocate for those kinds of extremes aren't living in reality, and the world is shades of competing ideals.

And the other part is people who don't benefit from and are often directly threatened by that institution. I'm not talking about criminals, I'm talking about people who are treated like criminals because of their socioeconomic status. What good are police doing for you if you're a poor black guy who gets frequently harassed for living your life? I worked with a guy like that who was borderline mentally handicapped with a low IQ. Police frequently stopped him because he looked "off", and he wound up being frequently bounced around the court system for missing pointless court dates when he could barely read or write or possibly have any way of keeping that schedule. He liked to talk tough, but he was a sweetheart who would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. What the fuck good did the police ever do for him? That's his reality.

Property owner? You benefit from the police and the state having a monopoly on violence. That's not an appropriate reference to phrase this question.
