Isnt the average commute time to and from work near a hour for most people?
Note the "for minimum wage" part of my post. I know plenty of people who have an hour commute for non-minimum wage jobs. A lot of my friends, after graduation, got jobs about an hour and half drive away. Even though this was a high-paying, cushy office job, they were getting crushed by the cost of gas, wear and tear on their car, and just the mental toll of being isolated in a car for three hours a day. Every last one of them moved closer because that commute was unsustainable.

I'm sure it doesn't take a genius to extrapolate that someone making $30/hr can't afford to live that far away also means that someone making less than a third of that can't make a third of the commute.
