Particularly with how Valentine's greatest defensive power clearly and visually emanates from a certain point. You don't even need Constantine's vast knowledge of the arcane to realize 'hey the girl is buffing my enemy with this crazy light beam'. Constantine has innumerable ways at his disposal to separate the two and once love train is down Valentine has no way to stop his opponent's luck fuckery. Not to say that Constantine wouldn't be able to eventually find a way to break through love train anyway, but the removal of Lucy is the clearest and most likely outcome. Constantine is no idiot.
