lolwut? Tips are service-oriented (in theory) and built around a long interaction. Retail is a quick in & out. A waiter might have 5-10 tables an hour, whereas a cashier might see 50-100 customers in an hour. Cashiers have far less labor per customer and far more customers. This topic doesn't make any... oh, wait, I guess it's a troll topic, isn't it? Got me again!

We need to raise the minimum wage and there should be a mandatory minimum tip for every transaction (something small, like $0.25)

lolwut? First, while 25-cents is small by tip standards, it's not really small in general considering how quickly that adds up. Second, and more importantly, you'd have workers JUST ON TIPS ALONE potentially making $25/hour, then they'd be getting another $9-14 on your increased minimum wage for $34-39/hour.... which is far more than countless other jobs make, ultimately fucking up the jobs market. It's a completely nonsensical.... oh, wait, troll post. Got me again!

To clarify for our international friends. In america it is customery to underpay wait staff because some guy in the 1920s decided it would be cheaper if rich customers foot the bill

...they're paid less because they make so much on tips. We don't pay hourly workers less than the minimum wage and, if we did that like we do with waiters, they wouldn't be bringing in the kinds of tips waiters do.

And you say "food workers" but it's really just waiters. Your fast food workers are just minimum wage. And restaurant chefs are paid whatever.
