Perhaps they would have gone up anyway, but the fact of the matter is places where min wage increased drastically have had a much larger increase in cost of living than in the past, and in almost every situation, the cost of living increase has been far more severe and detrimental, then the bonus to the min wage (especially when you take into account the higher amount of taxes being paid on the additional income.

I live in the Bay Area and due to the tech industry and influx of techies the cost of living here exploded before minimum wage increases. The service industry is teetering on the brink because no one with a service job can afford to live here. A minimum wage is needed if these people aren't to be priced out.
