(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs Source: Hairspray Villain: Velma Von Tussle Nominator: Raka Putra (2 left) Favorite lyric: Those poor runner-ups might still hold some grudges / They padded their cups, but I screwed the judges https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCW-iFgUbKY&t=35s Villainy: 5 Characterization: 8 Melody: 5 Total: 18/30 You know, Hairspray has just never appealed to me. Maybe it was the fact that I was first introduced to it via the 2007 movie, starring John Travolta, who I've never been a fan of. Maybe it was the fact that I just really wasn't into musicals at the time it was introduced to me. Maybe it's the fact that a story centered primarily around trying to promote integration has all of like 3 named black characters (given the names Lil' Inez and Seaweed compared to the white cast, named Tracy, Edna, Velma, Penny, etc.). ANWYWAY this song is pretty decent. Michelle Pfeiffer definitely does a decent job here, though that's part of my problem with it. Anytime the song cuts away from Pfeiffer to the other cast members sing-talking in the middle of the song, it comes across as kind of awkward. Velma is of course a racist asshole, which doesn't put her near Pennywise's level, but she's certainly just a very unpleasant and nasty person. The main pleasant surprise here was the way the song goes a little deeper into Velma's character. Yes, she's nasty and racist, but she's also obsessed with her past and how great she used to be, which definitely adds another layer onto her refusal to see the world progress. --- Khal Kirby, warlord of the Super Star Khalasar PSN/Steam: CheddarBBQ https://goo.gl/Diw2hs ...
