As a teacher I'll say this about schools reopening:

Schools are very important to a community. In addition to regular education, they provide a place for kids to learn and practice social-emotional learning, engage in physical activity, have access to the Internet, and get proper nutrition. It can be a safe place for a student with a rough home life, and teachers/administration are one of the top reporters of child abuse. Even if all schools switched to a virtual model, there's no real replacement out there right now for all of these other services a school provides.

I want schools to reopen. I miss my classroom and I think it's important that kids are in school. What concerns me are districts that put out half-assed reopening plans. Parents who think the virus is a hoax. And community members who are misinformed and think things aren't that bad. I'm concerned about students bringing the virus home with them and spreading it further. I'm concerned with enforcing masks and social distancing in a school environment, especially with elementary/middle school kids.

Right now I don't feel right with all of this. I'm pissed that we're at this point because the President and his cronies didn't take the outbreak seriously in February/March. We could have shut down the country for a few months, kept everyone financially afloat, and come back in September with a severely reduced transmission rate. But no, now we need to bargain with the lives of kids, teachers, and families.
