The way the requirements are written makes it clear that they want to make sure that the person elected has the best interests of the country in mind, and not a foreign power. Remember, the US was fresh out of a war of independence at the time that it was written. I remember there being some residency requirements where you had to live in the US for X amount of years after living abroad to to be eligible.
