Werewolf Gimmick Source: The Mountain Goats Villain: The Werewolf Nominator: TheArkOfTurus Favorite lyric: Some sniveling local babyface with an angle he cant sell / Full werewolf off the buckle like an angel straight from hell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZdfbFBoZ3I Villainy: 7 Characterization: 10 Melody: 8 Total: 25/30 So Ayreon's wasn't the only concept album I made a note to myself to listen through after the list, as The Mountain Goats' "Beat the Champ" definitely caught my attention after this hit. On it's own the song is a real nice listen; the vocals are intense and the constant strum supporting it makes the whole song really gritty and raw. It's a little unsettling honestly, and I love it. But where this song really shines is in the way it builds up this character so well in so little time. The song follows what appears to be a professional wrestler, in character as a werewolf. He seems to be the star of the show, likely due to how well he plays up his character, but there's where things start to get wild. As the Werewolf gets WAY too into his character, he becomes an unreliable narrator. He starts talking about things like "blood pooling on the canvas." As a listener, it's difficult to know how much of this is serious is how much is part of the show? How much violence is he putting on as part of the character and how much is he actually inflicting? When he mentions everyone ending up "dead before the dawn," is he talking about the personas being abandoned post-show, or is he talking about actual slaughter?
