They have bigger responsibilities and higher expectations placed on them. Cops need to have 5-6 years of training with learning the law, de escalation, dealing with mental health issues etc before they step out onto the street. You only got Wal-Mart greeter out of all of that? Really? Way to pick, and choose. Shablagoo posted... 40% is actually way higher than the civilian population. More than 2x as high. You're also comparing 800,000 officers to 325 million people living in America. Of course the former % is going to be higher, because the group is way, way smaller. Crescente posted... I don't think it's an issue of reforming or defunding the cops. Police, just like everyone else, are human. This means that they are a succeptable to making mistakes and doing something dumb under pressure. No amount of training can prevent you from doing some of the inane and seemingly irrational things some cops do. With great power comes great responsibility. I'm pretty sure cops have the best training one can get considering it's a profession that's been around for a long time. Perhaps maybe they should be scrutinized more if they make mistakes? I dont know. I'm sure there are some bad apples out there, but I just don't believe that the ones that you see are out with a chip on their shoulders and just want to fuck everyone over. Honestly? Nothing. It's like gun violence. Once it happens, social media, politicians, news outlets will talk about it, what should be done, what has to be done. There might be a protest, and riots or two. Nothing really gets done, other than more divide, and damage from within. We forget, and move on, until another incident occurs. Rinse, and repeat. The circle of life. A Spiral. --- ...
