When Thor Skywalker polled his viewers on whether their views of the prequel trilogy have improved, more than 60% of them voted for the "I never disliked them in the first place" option.

There you have it. The sequel trilogy was made specifically to win over people turned off by the prequels, so it's no surprise this approach would backfire among Star Wars fans for whom this was not the case. I just don't get how they have the gall to proclaim that they are the core fanbase somehow when they weren't very visible until fairly recently.
