No coincidence they were all released in the same time period. That was back when sharing gaming news through the internet was kicking into high gear, and when gamers as a whole were young enough to overreact to everything. Hype for those games self-perpetuated and reached absurd levels because we'd never seen anything like it before and didn't have the context of hype of that level not living up to expectations. The newer young generation of gamers still have that bushy-eyed level of excitement for the world but they also have many more examples of hype backlash to use as cautionary tales, as well as old fogey gamers telling them to cool their jets.
