Deadly Premonition is probably a top five game of all time for me. DP2 isn't even a top five game this year.

The characters and tone are all great, but the story just feels unfinished. I mostly enjoyed the journey, assuming there would be a great pay-off at the end like the first game, but the ending was a mess. The third act is resolved super anticlimatically due to a convenient lightning strike? What was the point of the Goddess of Fertility? She just shows up and dies almost immediately. Then the big twist is that the tall guy is, shock, the tall guy? And no-one finds Lise's body for 14 years because... no one thought to look for her? She wasn't even that well hidden! Her dad owns the building and in 14 years never thought to look in in the basement? And when they do find her, they don't arrest the guy managing the building? And what was the Clarkson blood curse, really, other than something Lena decided was a thing? And why didn't Patti have the curse if, supposedly, her blood was more concentrated with Clarkson blood (even though that makes no fucking sense, as she'd have the same amount of Clarskon blood as her parents)? And the point of cutting up and posing the bodies is that if you line them up in a specific way in the same room, they sorta made the shape of the Red Tree symbol? What was Kaysen's plan at the end? Get Aaliyah to slowly shoot York while he... danced? In front of the ONLY GUY WHO CAN SEE AND KILL HIM? Swery didn't even answer the one plot point he had to cut from DP1, which was what was the deal with Willie?

I also have some miscellaneous complaints:

  • Why did no one ever ask York about his scar?
  • What was the point of drum?
  • The sidequests were super disappointing and unrewarding and don't get me started on the stupid ass 'Stamp' system. Locking all my suits behind that nonsense.
  • The open world and combat sections added literally nothing. This game would have been just as good had it been a visual novel or something more akin to a Telltale game or Until Dawn or something.
  • Stop interuppting unique dialogue because I stubbed my toe or some shit. The amount of time I missed out on unique conversations because York bumped something or I picked up a shiny or whatever was infuriating. You basically had to stand stock still and listen to the dialogue for fear of accidentally interrupting it. I even missed most of Kaysen's monologue at the end, because it told me to hold forward on the analogue stick. In the first game I could flip my car on its roof and York would just keep going.
  • Why does York seemingly forget almost everyting about Le Carre during Greenvale? It's implied he's familiar with the Otherworld and the red seeds, but he never mentions anything about the Red Tree or the red seed's effects, etc.
  • Why do they spoil the reveal of Patti's surname immediately? That could have been a cool moment when we found out and instead it was just like 'yeah, and?'
  • I really hate the narrative device of Houngan. York does ZERO actual detective work in the game, he just blindly follows the Oracles and then is constantly asking 'why did no one tell me this' when he finds out basic information he could have discovered if he just bothered to ask.
  • Also, the 'puzzles' in the game are all worthless. Like opening the door to Lena's lab is the dumbest shit. It's impossible to figure out, so York just monologues then tells you the answer then yells at you to input the answer over and over until you do. Just make it a cutscene! Same for the Oracles, they sometimes give you one location to choose from and still react like you cracked some incredible code
  • We never found out the deal with Ocra Boy...

I've read some stuff that suggests that Aaliyah was originally supposed to investigate Le Carre in 2019 in parallel to York in 2005, but it got cut in favour of the extended 'sit n talk' sequences in Boston and that makes a lot of sense. It really feels like a lot of her stuff was cut, including what was totally supposed to be a boss fight with Tree-Zach. Also the fact that during the funeral scene at the end, Danny hasn't aged at all and is wearing the exact same clothes again suggests that they just ran out of time. Also explains why the story is so disjointed and they outright spoil things during the Boston sections.

Really bummed, as I was hyped for this and it completely failed to stick the landing.
