Developers aren't immune to overpromising features, or miscalculating just how much money is actually necessary to fund a project (since that wouldn't have been their job as part of a larger development studio or publisher). We've already seen multiple developers who went freelance on Kickstarter and crashed and burned.
There's a definite trend in general (applying to more than just video games), that the more successful a crowdfunded project is, the more it risks bloat and feature creep killing the entire project. People generally assume more money = better final project, but that isn't always the case.
