The Old Kingdom book series had a somewhat interesting build-up to its "true" afterlife which you never actually get to see; instead you see the transitional space before someone is irretrievably dead (it's a series about necromancy btw). To put it simply, Death is portrayed as a river designed to force the dead down its stream to their end beyond the nine gates which segment the nine precincts of the river.
