To put it simply, Death is portrayed as a river designed to force the dead down its stream to their end beyond the nine gates which segment the nine precincts of the river. The necromancers in the series sometimes enter Death in order to try and either retrieve and revive the dead, or to drive a powerful dead creature further into Death.

This actually reminded me that Riverworld was a thing.

It's basically an afterlife where literally every human who has ever lived throughout history wakes up one day on a massive river that seems to go on forever, in little clusters where there are people from all different ages. So you could theoretically wind up living in a town with Napoleon, Helen of Troy, a 15th century Incan, and one of the Egyptian workers who helped build the Pyramids. And whenever anyone dies, they just wake up somewhere else on the river.

Also, everyone is reincarnated into their bodies as they were when they were 25, in perfect health, with all diseases, injuries, or deformities cured. And everyone basically has a magic box that gives them enough food for the day so no one has to starve.

And, of course, being humans, they almost immediately find ways to circumvent the rules and be total dicks to each other.
