Anagram 09/15/20 11:25:34 AM #106: | The Picard Maneuver Assuming this is the FTL maneuver, and not pulling on his shirt, this is fine. It's cool to establish that Picard isn't just a diplomat, can is indeed capable of kicking ass by outsmarting people. It's a shame this comes up in basically one episode and never again, because it is a clever and interesting use of FTL in a space combat scenario. In fact, it's so clever that it's impossible to believe it was invented by Picard and not someone centuries before him, but okay. Bajor I wonder why Bajor was chosen for DS9's setting. That's a lie, I know -- it's because Bajorans have easy makeup for the thousands of extras. As a setting, Bajor is okay. It's fine. It's easily the least interesting of the planets and races that got a lot of attention. I mean, when you think of the major Star Trek races, it's Vulcans, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Ferengi, Bajorans, and... Orions? Andorians? My point is that there's a very clear line between the races that got a lot of attention from the writers and the races that didn't, and of the former category, Bajorans are the least interesting. Even the planet is basically just a nice-looking planet. You don't have the Vulcans' stark temples, the Klingons' warrior aesthetic, the Romulans' sharp angles, the Cardassians' fascism, or the Ferengis' domes and constant rain. This is part of why I was shocked when LD put a Bajoran as one of its main characters. I was like, "Woah, they know enough about Star Trek to remember Bajorans?" Worf's Baldric Worf's baldric comes up twice in the series. The first time it's when the crew loses its memories and everyone assumes Worf is in charge because he has a fancy sash, and when they learn the truth, Worf has to apologize to Picard while acting extremely embarrassed. That's a good moment and a good episode. The second time is when Riker rides Ro's ass for wearing a Bajoran religious earring against regulations, and she's like DUDE WORF'S THINGY and Riker has no real comeback for that. What makes the baldric weird is that it's supposed to be a symbol of Worf's noble house. By itself, that's fine. But no other Klingon ever wears a baldric, including his brother! Very bizarre. Gargoyles I have only watched a tiny bit of Gargoyles, but I know that Johnathon Frakes and Marina Sirtis are on it. The only episode I've seen is the one where the bad guys turn a city to stone so they can steal one day from everyone's lives and become immortal. From what I remember, Frakes is the human mastermind villain and Sirtis is like a crazy gargoyle chick who's survived thousands of years and wants to wipe out humanity, right? Gargoyles always came across to me like a B-tier cartoon. It was never on the popularity level of something like Batman: TAS. Morn A brilliant addition to DS9. DS9 is very good about having a lot of memorable side characters, and Morn is one of them. He's always there in the bar, doing nothing, never really interacting with the plot (except that one time he does). His very existence implies that he has his own stories and that there are plenty of other alcoholics in the galaxy, and his design as an alien is fantastic. Webster Series Finale I will watch this later and make a writeup based on it. I hadn't heard of this until now. ---------------- Make it So Captain Jean-luc Picard of the USS Enterprise The Beginning of Wisdom The Mirror Universe The Neutral Zone The Rules of Acquisition Data & Picard The Doctor Geordie's Epic Maneuver Transporters Assimilate This Galaxy Quest Q Morn Combadges Tribbles TNG Warp Core Sound The Riker Lean Frequency of Uniform Changes in Starfleet Chain of Command Torture Sequence Kirk is a Jerk Shirt Timescape The Chase Where No Fan Has Gone Before Duet Children of Time Ambassador-class Starship Wolf in the Fold Live Long and Prosper Enterprise s3 Escape Pods Gowron Worf's Baldric TOS Klingons Technobabble Gargoyles RedLetterMedia's Picard Re:Views Holodeck Episodes Mike and Rich's Top 5 TNG episodes Brent Spiner The Picard Maneuver Anagram Raemes T.
