Anagram 09/16/20 1:33:14 AM #153: | Picard Song Here's to the finest crew in STARFLEET Engage. I played Xenogears while listening to a podcast that uses the Picard Song as its intro and outro, so whenever I hear this song, I now think of Xenogears, which is unfortunate. Andorians Did you know Andorians were banned from TNG, DS9, and VOY for being too silly-looking? Only one appears for like three seconds in a holodeck during one episode of TNG. One of ENT s1's only good decisions was bringing them back and expanding on them. They're also sort of an iconic Star Trek alien despite their sparse appearances. They're not on the level of Vulcans or anything, but they're a solid "Oh, it's that guy" sort of alien. I'm sad that their culture is so boring, though. ENT could have done anything with them, and it gives them a really boring warrior culture. Ah well, it's something. The Host Who nominated this? I'm too lazy to check. Why would you waste a nomination on this of all things? I'm judging you harshly, mystery person. So the premise of this episode is that the trill are a species of humanoids who can bond for life with a symbiont who mind controls them for the rest of their lives and there is no benefit to agreeing, but they always agree. Crusher falls in love with one, but its host dies, so it has to be implanted in Riker to survive until a new trill can show up. Crusher is weirded out by symbiont!Riker being interested in her, but she's even more weirded out when the new host shows up and it's a lady. Honestly, I can't really judge Crusher for not being interested in this anymore. I can't blame her for being straight, that's fine, and I super can't blame her for pushing the escape button on a relationship where her boyfriend had three different bodies in a week. DS9 made basically every decision correctly about the trill. Change it so they merge minds instead of taking over, change it so they have sexy spots instead of wacky foreheads, change basically everything except the basic premise. That's how you expand on a preestablished race, ENT. We don't need Andorian generic warrior cultures and Orion slave auctions where a guy fondles T'Pol's boobs. I can't believe that's canon. Q's Mariachi Band One of the classic 4chan Star Trek images, alongside Picard's facepalm. It's cringey in the context of the episode, but it makes for a great reaction image. Harry Mudd God, another character ruined by DIS. I'm sorry, I'm genuinely trying, but give me a break here, he's on DIS, there's nothing I can do about it. In TOS, Mudd is just a rogue. He shows up twice, he has wacky plans to make money by doing slightly evil things, but he's not a murderous psychopath with the power to destroy the Federation. In DIS, though? He's introduced in a Klingon prison and betrays the other humans. They escape, but leave him to be tortured to death. Now, we don't know this at the time, but those humans are really a Mirror Universe human and an undercover Klingon agent, so I can actually accept for once that they'd act like no Federation human would ever act. I'm okay with that. But then Mudd shows up again, reveals that he has a magical time travel crystal (why he didn't use it to escape the Klingons is left unexplained), and he plans to use it to steal Discovery and sell it to the Klingons to destroy the Federation with, all to make money and get revenge for leaving him behind. So there's a Groundhog Day episode where Stametz is the only one besides Mudd who can see what's going on, but the episode still manages to be about Burnham's relationship with Ash (barf), and when they defeat Mudd, they wackily contact his ex-girlfriend and she's like OH IT'S MUDD I LOVE YOU MUDD PLEASE HAVE SEX WITH ME and everyone smiles and laughs like haha we outwitted Mudd, now he's forced to marry the beautiful princess of a planet (because the Federation has royalty now) for the crimes of trying to destroy the Federation and uncountable murders. I take it back, Spock is not the TOS character most ruined by DIS, it's Harry Mudd. The most shocking thing in all of Discovery to me, and this will sound like a joke but it's not, is that Mudd's girlfriend in that episode has the same name as his wife in TOS. I couldn't believe it. I could not believe that someone had actually googled his wife's name and used it correctly. I'm still amazed.
