Lorewise the 1st character you play as is the daughter of the 1st game's 1st character, and theres at least 1 boss fight that is a returning fight from 1 with new mechanics. Don't know if there's anything else, but considering it's very light on story you likely won't be missing out on much from not playing the 1st one aside from maybe a few references to it. ...
