I downloaded it but haven't played it, yet. Looks fun. I was curious how the free-to-play model works with the game. Do they make it difficult to level or progress in a way that encourages purchasing experience or anything?

no, you can progress through all the existing content without paying for it. there are a few sought-after characters that people usually pull for but you don't actually need them to progress. and your progress through the main quest is based on your adventure rank, which is gained by things like completing dungeons and finding landmarks
