I used to be one of those people who said something along the lines of "well, if the left is mean to me then I'll just move to the right". This all starts with left wingers being the only ones who care about the "enlightened centrist" and "centrists are really right wingers" thing. But then I realized that was being stupid. Ideally you should always vote based on your beliefs, not based on what random people have said and done. Unfortunately with the first past the post voting system, you also have to consider whether you're wasting your vote by voting for a third party candidate who has no chance of winning and may hurt the Dem/Rep candidate you agree with more. But that being said, nothing is more of a waste than not voting at all. Individually it may not be big deal that you're not voting, but when you add everyone who thinks like you do suddenly only a slight majority of eligible voters are voting for the presidential election (which is the most popular election).
