Oh, they exist. I know one of them, but not very well for obvious reasons. Really, conspiracy theorists are rather common, and exist across the political spectrum. Thing is that the internet lets them go into a spiraling feedback loop that feeds their desire for conspiratorial nonsense while satisfying their preexisting political biases. QAnon has grown very rapidly in particular, mostly, I think, because (ironically) people in authority positions have given it supposed legitimacy.

That's true. The leader of the cult in my town is well-known for having testified on behalf of an infant rapist's character in court (and succeeded in getting him a lightened sentence) and blackmailing a teenager with her diary after she was groomed and raped by another member of his "church." He followed through on the threat, too. No charges were brought against him for the second event; it's public knowledge, with his blackmail messages having been made available for anyone to read, but the creep has a surprising amount of clout.
