The problem with the concept as a whole (which extends beyond AoC) is the arbitrary definition of adulthood. Emotional, intellectual, and physical maturity doesn't happen at the same rates for everybody so somebody who's not in the right place doesn't magically change the day they go from 17 to 18. Meanwhile you have people at a far greater level of maturity than somebody in their 20s. I've known people who dropped out, started working, and covered all of their own expenses (the bare minimum for adulting) at 16 and I know plenty more people in their mid-20s who haven't met that barest minimum threshold.
