I'm sorry you're going through this, and that your friend was going through that. My brother's best friend asked him to hang out one night, and my brother was getting off work tired and declined, his friend committed suicide that night. That was almost ten years ago, we still get sad about it. But he doesn't feel as guilty anymore, he knows it wasn't his fault. It was just the wrong night, and his friend chose that one. They had hung out before that night and it was fine. Maybe he would have gone over that night and it wouldn't have happened, but would have happened another night. Or maybe not. But he can't know any of that, so it's not worth drowning yourself in guilt over.
