That's just the way it worked out. There's no special reason behind it, just like how opening your mouth wide and exhaling softly but audibly signals "bed time, pass it on". We know it's a signal, that much is clear, but as to why a given reflexive behavior became biologically linked to a given social signal is anybody's guess.
Yawning has a biological reason. It intakes oxygen quickly in order to cool the brain. Your brain naturally heats up the longer you stay awake.
