X1 is an overall great title. Just the right difficulty, great soundtrack, very memorable.

X2 is also really good. More challenges, advancement in the story, good music. I'd say the weapons are flawed, but it's still a fun game.

X3 is okay but the difficulty ramped up, and there are many moments where it feels uninspired.

X4 is fun but has it's issues. I think it's just too easy. Sure there some difficult parts, but you can fly through most of the game. The bosses are the highlight. Again good soundtrack. lol the voice cast. The story expands more, and the cutscenes are nice.

X5 is where the problems began. First Alia, please shut up!! Next is the difficulty, but at the same time the checkpoints are bizarre. Death almost has no meaning. The introduction of rescuing Reploids. It's alright here, but unnecessary. The stages are not that good. Some more tedious than others. Decent soundtrack. You can collect two armors now, but by the time you get the second it's purpose is mostly just to grab a couple of items and you're done with it. This was originally meant to be the last of the X titles, and honestly it would have been bad note to go out on.

X6..... oh boy..... horrendous stage design, annoying enemies, many instant death areas, the nightmare effects. The Nightmare enemies in general who can also infect the Reploids you need to rescue. Many of these Reploids hold parts, some of which you'll need to complete the game. More Alia, High Max, the final stages. Again there are two armors, but you don't use the second much at all. I like (most of) the music, that's about it.

X7 is by far the worst. Bad stages, mediocre soundtrack, slow pacing, auto aim, Reploids can outright die. Axel was a horrible addition to the series. Unlocking X is a chore. Changing over to 3D was a mistake. BURN TO THE GROUND!! Bad weapons, bad enemies, bad gimmicks. Seriously what even is Hyena's fight... and it just gets worse.

X8... well it was a step in the right direction. We're back to mostly 2D platforming. There's a bit too much variety in stage gimmicks, but some of it looks fun. Good soundtrack. IMO it has the best boss theme of the series. You no longer have to rescue Reploids, but now there's a currency system and stages are filled with gems called Metals. It just feels out of place. The tag team aspect was a neat addition. Axel isn't as annoying this time. There are some fun unlockables and hidden features. The final stages though, I don't care for them, especially the last one.
