They do whatever they have to do have to protect their loved ones or even strangers. The shooter in this story? I'm willing to bet that he wasn't happy about killing the robber. He did what he had to do. It's easy for us to say "Oh, why didn't he just shoot him in the leg or in the shoulder?" Well, that's easy for us to say because we weren't actually there.
